Wieltje - Northumbrian Division Memorial

 

 

 

 

16th (Irish) Division Memorial, Wytschaete. The Division (with the 36th (Ulster) Division ) captured the ruins of the village of Wytschaete on the 7th June 1917, the Divisions attacking side by side, following the mine explosions early that morning.

The Memorial was unveiled by General Sir Bryan Mahon on the 22nd August 1926 being blessed by Father O’Connell formerly chief chaplain to the 16th Division.  Pipers of the Irish Guards played the lament as the cross was unveiled.
